Earth Day Plea

Forgotten Nations is a venue for the Nations not given any representation in world governments to have their voices heard. Today, for Earth Day we give voice to the Silent Nations of our planet.

Earth Day Plea

Earth Day was started in 1970. People were becoming more aware of the damage humans were doing to the environment, wildlife and human health. According to Earth Day Network:

“On April 22,1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. By the end of that year, the first Earth Day had led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. “It was a gamble,” Gaylord recalled, “but it worked.””

Now it has become a holiday. It is a day of festivals or projects done at home or maybe a park. Some cities have festivals that help educate people about the Earth and raise money for organizations. Education is good but action is greater. Earth Day is no longer a day of action but a day of festivals if anything at all.

Where are those 20 million people marching and demanding change…that happened? The Earth is under much greater and more urgent threat than it was over 45 years ago.

Humans have known for decades of Climate Change, changing names through the years, the Ozone Layer, Greenhouse Effect, Global Warming,,…. Nothing to effect real change has been done since. In 2015 people cheered over the passing of the Paris Climate Accord. It is a non binding agreement for countries to reduce their emissions to keep the Earth’s temperature no higher than 2°C. Far short of what your scientists told you to do but you hailed it as a “compromise” or “a start”. 2°C is still catastrophic for the Earth and life on it. If you had a child dying of cancer and doctors had a cure would you follow their instructions and save your child’s life or would you go home, give him or her a multivitamin and say it is a start, a compromise?

You have waited so long the death of our planet is already in motion. The Earth is lashing back trying to shake the disease, the illness that plagues Her, your human pollution. She responds violently with storms, droughts, floods, etc. because you have given her no choice. After the Paris Climate Accord you so celebrated you increased your pollution and bulldozed even more forests that could have cleaned up some of your pollution. Earth has a cancer and her immune system has to fight it and put it back into balance again. All of Earth, all of Nature, our natural state is balance. While the human natural state is excess.

Humans place man made money and your businesses at greater value than clean air, water and land. This is a behavior those of us at Forgotten Nations will never understand. How can anything be more valuable than health and life? Ours and yours?

Because you let decades go by without changing your behavior, and instead increasing your pollution, we can no longer afford your “compromises” or your “starts”. You have what your scientists told you has to be done. Anything less will save no one.

On this Earth Day decide where your convictions lie.
